Google and Magic Leap are working together on mixed reality

Google extends help to Magic Leap. The manufacturer of the mixed reality headset (unless they are large glasses) will work with the search engine around the potential of XR technologies.

Google is far from having left mixed reality (XR) in the hands of Meta or Apple. The company is a stakeholder in Samsung’s future high-end headset, and the partnership signed with Magic Jump shows that on the Mountain View side, we are not giving up on this technology.

Magic Leap is back in force

This agreement is intended broadly: it is ” multifaceted “and” strategic », which allows the passage not to give too many details about its real substance. This involves combining Magic Leap’s expertise in XR technology and optics, with Google platform technologies. ” By combining our efforts, we can drive the future of the XR ecosystem with unique and innovative product offerings », rejoices Shahram Izadi, general manager of AR/XR at Google.

The press release is brief and gives few details. We can imagine, however, that this partnership represents a welcome breath of fresh air for Magic Leap, which experienced incredible media coverage in the 2010s, before hitting the wall of reality with the launch of its first product, the Magic Leap One. This pioneering headset in mixed reality technology failed to find its audience… a bit like Humane and its connected badge, the Ai Pin.

After the commercial oven Magic Leap One, the company kept a low profile and launched a 2nd generation aimed at businesses with apparently a little more success. At least enough to catch the attention of Google… It remains to be seen how and around which project this joint work will turn! The search engine presented the Astra project of connected glasses with a rather impressive multi-modal AI at the last Google I/O. Maybe Magic Leap has something to contribute?
